Many dog owners feel guilty about skipping a walk, but the truth is your dog would much rather stay cool than risk overheating.
The good news?
Physical exercise isn't the only way to tire out your dog. In fact, mental enrichment can be just as rewarding, helping to reduce boredom, build confidence and leave your dog feeling happily exhaustedāall from the comfort of your home.
Here are some of our favourite indoor activities to keep those tails wagging during a heatwave!
š¾ 1. Hide & Seek
Dogs love using their incredible noses.
Hide treats or your dog's favourite toy around the house and let them sniff them out.
Start with easy hiding places before making it more challenging.
Bonus:Ā You'll probably have just as much fun watching them search!
š 2. Scatter Feeding
Instead of serving dinner in a bowl, scatter your dog's kibble across the floor, garden (in the shade), or a snuffle mat.
Searching for every last piece keeps their brain busy and satisfies their natural foraging instincts.
š§© 3. Puzzle Toys
Puzzle feeders are fantastic for rainy daysāand hot days too!
Whether it's a treat ball, sliding puzzle or interactive feeder, your dog has to work for their reward, providing excellent mental stimulation.
š„ 4. Frozen Kong Treats
Stuff a Kong with:
š¾ Dog-friendly peanut butter (xylitol-free)
š¾ Banana
š¾ Greek yoghurt
š¾ Wet food
š¾ Blueberries
Freeze it overnight and you've got a cool, long-lasting treat.
š 5. Teach a New Trick
Who says training has to happen outdoors?
Spend 5ā10 minutes teaching something new like:
āļø Spin
āļø High five
āļø Roll over
āļø Touch
āļø Find your toy
Keep sessions short, fun and reward-based.
š§ŗ 6. Build a Snuffle Box
Grab a cardboard box.
Add:
Towels
Empty toilet roll tubes
Safe toys
Crumpled paper
Hide treats throughout and let your dog investigate.
It's like a treasure hunt for dogs!
š¾ 7. Gentle Indoor Games
If you have enough space, try:
Gentle tug
Roll a soft ball
Toy fetch down the hallway
No need for zoomies around the furniture!
āļø 8. Make Doggy Ice Lollies
Freeze dog-safe treats inside water or low-salt stock.
Try adding:
š Strawberries
š« Blueberries
š„ Carrots
š Apple slices (no seeds)
These make fantastic cooling snacks.
š§ 9. The Muffin Tin Game
Place treats inside a muffin tin.
Cover each hole with a tennis ball or toy.
Your dog has to work out how to uncover each tasty surprise.
š 10. Cuddle Time Counts Too
Not every activity has to involve running around.
Sometimes your dog just wants to curl up beside you while you watch a film.
Hot weather naturally makes dogs more tired, so don't be surprised if they spend more time snoozing.
Rememberā¦
Dogs don't understand calendars.
They don't know they've "missed" Tuesday's walk.
What they doĀ know is how they feel.
If they're cool, comfortable, mentally stimulated and spending time with their favourite people, they're usually perfectly happy.
Skipping one or two walks during a heatwave won't harm your dogābut heatstroke certainly can.
Looking Ahead
Once the temperatures drop, those exciting Sniffari adventures will still be waiting!
Until then, focus on keeping your dog cool, safe and entertained indoors.
